When you've invested in a dog bed, you want to make sure that it will last for as long as possible. Yet at some point, the day will come where you need to replace it. Here are some reasons you might need to replace your pet's bed.
Tears Holes and Loose Strings
As your dog uses the bed, expect that there will be a few tears or holes over time. This often occurs with low-quality beds as they are made of low-quality materials. But if you bought a high-quality bed expects the damages to not occur until several years. Keep an eye on the holes in the bed as when it is large enough to fit your dog's head, it is probably time to buy a new one. Also keep an eye on those loose strings attached to the bed, as it may cause choking hazards.
Unexplained Hair Loss and Sickness
Unexplained hair loss and unexplained sickness could be a sign that it is time to replace your dog's bed. There could be many bacteria thriving in their bed, which can cause a plethora of health problems. To ensure that your dog bed isn't causing the problem, make sure that the bed is washed regularly. But if you know that your dog bed is clean and they are still getting sick, then it may be time to replace their bed.
Odors that Won't Come Off
When you notice that there is an odor coming out of your dog's bed especially after cleaning, it may be time for a replacement. There are certain materials used to make dog beds that can trap odors and won't go away even after numerous cleaning attempts.
Pests and Parasites
If pets and parasites start to live in your dog's bed, it may be difficult to get rid of them. You'll also run the risk of getting these critters to migrate to other places in your home.
This can become a costly remedy and the cheapest option is to replace their bed as soon as there is an infestation.
Keep an eye out on these infestations:
- Ants
- Spiders
- Cockroaches
- Worms
- Ticks
- Fleas
- Mites
Your Pet is Aging
As your dog grows old, so are their needs. Your puppy bed might not fit your one-year-old dog. Your dog might need a better bed to ease their joints or allergies. Working dogs might need supportive beds such as memory foam mattresses that conform to their body. Senior dogs may need orthopedic memory foam dog beds.
You Get What You Paid For
When choosing a dog bed, always remember that you get what you pay for. Low-quality beds may be cheap, but this is because they are not made to last long. You are likely to replace it more often compared to the ones that are a little more expensive. Also, it is not always the price that defines quality. Look for a durable fabric bed, easy to wash, and waterproof to protect the foam on the inside of the bed.
How often you need to replace your dog bed depends on a lot of factors. If you are asking yourself if you need to replace your pet's bed, chances are you already have the answer for that. Also, keep an eye on your pup because most often they will tell you when they are ready.
